Some of the symptoms of colds could be seen as the body’s way of telling us to slow down and give it a chance to sort itself out. However logical this sounds, modern society doesn’t fall in line. We need to keep going, and so relieving the symptoms of a chesty cough or runny nose is high priority. Here are some alternative cold remedies that I use to help me get through the day when I’m suffering:
Coughs and sore throats
Spoonful of honey – honey is very good at soothing a sore throat and reduce coughing. There are many schools of thought on how it actually works, whether there are chemical properties in the honey itself or whether the physical properties coat the lining of the throat, reducing the irritation.

Honey cough syrup – Honey works well on its own, but you can also add other ingredients. Try adding a teaspoon of glycerine and lemon juice as well. Other than tasting nice, it works really well.
Hot toddy – probably a good ol’ traditional favourite. I find it works really well for soothing a sore throat. The way I make it is by boiling a mug of water, to which I add two teaspoons of honey, two teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice and a tot of brandy (or whiskey). Stir and when cool enough, drink. This is ideal to take just before going to sleep.
Vinegar, onion and honey – doesn’t sound too inviting, but I was very surprised how well it works on a chesty cough, when I was introduced to it last year. Grate and onion into a bowl and soak in honey. Cover and leave overnight. In the morning strain the liquid and add an equal volume of brown vinegar to the mixture. Shake well and take two teaspoons every three to four hours.
Blocked and runny noses
Steam bath – I also find this is great when I have a blocked nose. Add a few drops of lavender oil to boiling water, in a bowl. Place your head over the bowl and then cover with a towel. Gently inhale the steam. It often takes a while for the steam to ease your nasal passages.
Lavender oil – this oil can be used neat. Place a few drops of oil onto a handkerchief and gently inhale. Drops can also be placed on your pillow so that you inhale as you sleep.
Potter’s Allerclear tablets – these tablets are a formulation of garlic and echinacea. They are excellent for clearing up nasal congestion.
General
Echinacea tablets – Echinacea is good for boosting the immune system in general, and is particularly good for the common cold, both as a preventative and to help overcome the virus.
Garlic – this bulb has antibiotic properties. It is best eaten raw.
Finally, maintaining a healthy diet is always a good way to help prevent a cold, but it is also important when you have one. Make sure you include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet, and of course the old traditional chicken soup is always worth trying!
