As a child growing up from the age of 14 to now, my family didn’t believe in using medicine to cure the common cold or the flu. My grandmother is Bahamian and in the Bahamas there wasn’t aneed for medicaiton because everything was herbal. There were two remedies that we would use in our house and those were the traditional Gin shot and the Honey drink. Both of these remedies seemed to work great for everyone that tried them and now I’m going to share them with you.
The first remedy, is the Gin shot which seemed to always be a favorite of the family. We would take a shot glass, pour it half full of Seagram’s gin, then fill the rest of the glass with orange juice. You then drink down in one shot, hence the shot glass and right after suck on a peppermint to kill the flavor of the gin. With in minutes of drinking the shot your body gets this overwhelming sensation and you begin to sweat. If yo have any congestion this will surely clear it up and have you feeling at least 50% better.
The second remedy is the follow up from the first remedy. For this recipe you will need 1 cup of honey, one whole lime, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 4 star-lite peppermints (or brach’s any that are strong). Slice the lime in half and squeeze both sides into a plastic container or something that can be placed in the microwave. Next you pour in the honey and place place th container int eh microwave for 30 seconds to allow the two liquids to blend together. Mix it together until the honey starts to stiffen up slightly add the mints and the sugar to give it a little flavor. Do not place in the refrigerator, it needs to remain at room temperature. Before going to bed, take two tablespoons of this concoction and within 2 to 3 days you should feel almost 100% better and can actually bare the remaining symptoms of the cold.
Other remedies that I like to try myself are to eat something spicy and allow my nose to run. Once I’m done eating I go and blow my nose and can almost blow everything that’s in there and it helps to relieve the congestion as well. Or going to club have a drink or two that has with liquor in it and dancing the night away and sweating the cold out. Everything deserves to be tried once. I would try not to drink anything really cold or that has ice because this can slow you down and add more congestion becuase of the build and thickness of the mucous. And the best of course is a good day of rest. There is no better medicine than being able to rest in your bed in peace and quiet under a nice warm blanket and just let nature take its course.
