Alternative remedies for a cold.
As soon as you feel a cold coming on, try gargling with a few drops of Tabasco sauce in a cup of hot water. Or if you don’t like the taste of Tabasco, use Echinacea instead. Simply add 2 teaspoons of Echinacea tincture to a cup of hot water, and gargle three times a day. As well as helping your immune system to perk up, it will help to ease a sore throat.
In America chicken soup is considered beneficial when suffering from a cold, as it eases nasal congestion, and the garlic and onions which are part of the recipe have anti-viral properties.
In the Philippines they also use a chicken soup, but their recipe includes ginger which helps to fight the flu virus, and is also anti-inflammatory. Thus reducing a swollen throat and nose.
The English home remedy for a cold is to stir a squeeze of fresh lemon juice into a cup of hot water, and add honey to taste. The acidity of the lemon is very effective in fighting bacteria, and the honey has healing properties of its own. If you have a headache with your cold, you can add water soluble aspirin to the drink. Lemon juice in hot water is also a very effective gargle for a cold.
All citrus fruit is full of Vitamin C, which helps the body to fight off infections. Eating citrus fruit regularly, or taking Vitamin C tablets, will help to prevent you from catching a cold. If you eat garlic daily, or onions to a lesser degree, it will also help to prevent one as they are good at killing germs, and have a rejuvenating effect on all tissues and systems.
Eucalyptus oil can be inhaled from a bottle, or a few drops can be sprinkled on a handkerchief (not a tissue as it will disintegrate) to be kept in your pocket and sniffed when needed. When you are at home it is a good idea to add a few drops to a large bowl or pan of very hot water, cover your head with a towel to contain the steam, and inhale for a few minutes. This method is the most effective for clearing a blocked nose and streaming eyes.
