We aren’t the only creature that can catch flu. The term “Bird Flu” tells us that birds can get hit with flu, too. The influenza virus can infect ferrets, cats, pigs, horses, chickens, etc. Some influenza virus can infect only human beings, or animals, while some others can infect both. When you catch flu, your pet ferrets are susceptible to flu, for they can easily get infected by the flu virus from people. They can also pass back the virus to people. You can tell if your ferrets catch the flu from the symptoms: thick discharge from their noses and eyes, sneezing, swollen red membranes around the eyes, decreased appetite. When you find these symptoms, take good care them, and give them due treatment. You should take measures to prevent the flu virus from spreading among them, try to avoid getting your family members infected by the flu virus that they may carry.
The flu virus that the cat carries can cause runny nose and a soar throat to them. The cat may sneeze, and suffer from mouth ulcers, muscle pains, joint pains, losing voice, etc. Cat flu can be very serious to the cats, particularly to the kittens. Some kittens may die from cat flu. Proper treatment can cure cat flu. So, if you find that you cat has caught flu, give it due treatment. Though there are special antiviral drugs in common use, some antibiotics may help. It is because that the flu is the one as in human flu. Due treatment is quite necessary; otherwise, the virus may damage the cat’s delicate lining of the nose and airways. What’s more, the bacterial infections can cause complications, such as serious ulcers, pneumonia, and so on.
Pig flu, also called swine flu, is similar to human flu. According to scientists’ research, there are four serotypes, which can infect pigs at the same time or separately. If a pig is infected by one type of virus, it may be infected by another a few days later. If there is a group of pigs and one of them catches flu, the others will be infected soon. However, most of them can survive and recover by themselves.
Horse flu is also called equine influenza. It can spread quickly in a group of horses. The horses with horse flu will run a fever. Most of them have dry hacking cough, a runny nose.
