The idea that getting more or less sleep can affect the length of time it takes to recover from the common cold is a popular one, although is also an idea based in fact. While there are other factors in recovery from any type of infection, getting enough rest seems to be one of the most important that there is. Certainly getting enough sleep if you aren’t already seems to be a universally agreed upon way to kill off infections faster.
Getting enough sleep compared to how active you are will mean that your immune system will be at an optimum efficiency. This means that wounds will heal faster and that illnesses will be overcome better then they would otherwise. The common cold in this respect is no different, particularly seen as it is an infection which most people have had many times in their life already. The fact that the common cold is not dangerous basically means that the only factor in recovery is the time period in which your body can overcome the infection.
People who tend not to get enough sleep are generally more prone to all kinds of diseases and infections. This is due to the fact that their immune systems will be slightly weakened from having to work harder. The human body is under attack at all times, by bacteria and viruses in the air, meaning that the immune system is constantly working to kill all of these harmful elements so that they cannot cause an infection. The effect of sleep is that the rest of the bodily functions are slowed down, as well as which the body is generally exposed to less bacteria etc when laying still.
If someone does not get enough sleep however, then the immune system will have to be running at full capacity more of the time than it should have to, and like a person made to work too hard, it gets weaker and more likely to slip up. This can mean that a bacteria can breed faster than the immune system can kill it off for long enough that an infection is caused, most often the common cold.
If that same person still does not get enough sleep, then they will often find that when they do have a cold, that it will take a lot longer to recover from than it usually would. This is because their immune system is already stretched from having to be more active then it naturally would, as well as trying to fight off an infection in the form of the common cold at the same time. The best thing to do of course is simply to try to get more sleep while at the same time trying to relax more, as stress is another factor in how well
