Benadryl is a good product for allergies. I am not quite sure why it would show up in the category of “Cold and Flu”, with one huge exception. When that cold or flu settles into an ear infection and distorts your equilibrium.
Almost 20 years ago, we moved to Missouri. The move required that we drive back and forth over the mountains in several trips. I had a little cold, nothing to write home about, it wasn’t slowing me down in the move.
As quickly as we were settled in, it was Christmas and we made another trip over the mountains to visit family through the holiday. By the time we got to west Texas, I was sick. Except for a little popping, my ear did not hurt.
I woke up dizzy in the night at our aunt and uncle’s house. I had never experienced anything like this dizziness before and thankfully have never experienced anything like it again.
I tried to get out of bed. I was aware that my head was on the floor, but could not seem to find the proper direction of up. I literally did not know which end was up. I could not get out of the bed and I could not get back into it. My equilibrium was completely backward.
The next morning, I had to have assistance to sit up, take the little capsules our aunt gave me, and drink the water. It was almost impossible. Afterward I collapsed back on my pillow, unable to balance and sit up on my own.
I managed to sleep the morning away as the little capsules did their job. I woke up to the aroma of a delicious Christmas dinner.
I opened my eyes. The room was still, the spinning gone. But, could I navigate the stairs? Yes! I would be able to celebrate with our family.
“What were those miraculous pills you gave me?”
“Just Benadryl,” our aunt said.
Since that time, I have discovered many reasons to use Benadryl. It is helpful for the irritation and itch of poison ivy, for instance.
Cold and flu? Maybe I have learned of yet another benefit of having Benadryl in my medicine cabinet.
