DayQuil is a cold and flu medicine that is produced by the Vicks company. It can be bought in either liquid (syrup) or capsule form and is aimed at daytime use. It does not contain any sedating anti-histamines, which can cause drowsiness. However, the night-time equivalent of Vicks DayQuil, called Vicks NyQuil, does contain sedating anti-histamines and therefore can cause drowsiness. This latter version of the product is designed to be used just before bed-time.
There are a variety of versions of the Vicks DayQuil brand to choose from. The Cold/Flu Multisymptom Relief version contains three active ingredients in it. Acetaminophen is a drug that provides pain and fever relief. A second active ingredient is dextromethorphan, which is a cough suppressant. The third active ingredient is phenylephrine, which is a nasal decongestant. Another version of the product, Vicks DayQuil Cough is only available as a syrup and contains only the cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, as an active ingredient. A third version of the product, Vicks DayQuil Sinus, provides pain and fever relief through acetaminophen, and a nasal decongestant effect through phenylephrine. Vicks DayQuil Sinus is only available as capsules.
As with any other cold and flu remedies there are issues of compatibility with any other medications you may be taking or with any other illnesses or conditions that you suffer from before choosing to take it. Vicks DayQuil should not be taken in conjunction with other antihistamines and cough suppressants, for example. If you suffer from a disease such as heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or asthma you should really consult your doctor or pharmacist before using the medicine. They should also be consulted if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Also, DayQuil should not be used in conjunction with other drugs that contain the active ingredient acetaminophen (Tylenol). This is because an excess of this substance can cause damage to the liver. This warning includes alcoholic drinks. Indeed possible users of DayQuil are warned that if they have three or above alcoholic drinks a day they should ask their doctor whether it would be appropriate for them to use the product.
