The common cold is caused by more than 200 identifiable viruses, and to date, even scientists don’t have enough evidence on how they are created and whether factors such as the weather, diet and exercise are the cause of getting a cold.
However, there are many ways to prevent, or minimize our chance to catch a cold, and many of these are simple daily practices.
1. Keep a practice of good hygiene
It’s true that there are many viruses and bacteria lurking in our environment in areas that we don’t expect. Keeping a good hygiene practice can keep these virus and bacteria to minimal level so to prevent these infecting us. Obvious things like washing your hands after going to the toilet, or just before a meal or a snack is important to keep the cold virus out of your body system. Keeping a clean house with plenty of light and ventilation ensures that any viruses hovering around in the air doesn’t stick around to infect us, and also make your living area more pleasant to be in.
2. Healthy eating and living
It’s no secret that healthier people will get sick less. By eating healthy and exercising you are keeping your body fit and your immune system high. Cold viruses often gets fought off by our immune systems in the early stages and by being healthy, we are keeping the virus at bay before it spreads in our body to make us feel worse. Eating the right things and balancing our diet to ensure we have sufficient intake in vitamins we need will also make sure our bodies function well to keep these virus away.
3. Drink lots of water
65% of the human body is made up of water. Deprive the body of that water means the body will become weak and prone to sickness. To ensure the body is filled with the water it requires, it is recommended we drink 2 litres of water a day. A dehydrated body will be like a body without nutrition, it’ll start to fail and our immune system will become weak for the cold virus to attack us.
4. Keep away from the virus
If you know the cold virus is spreading in the community, or in your family, then spend as little time as you can being crowded with people infect with the cold. Less exposure means less chance of catching the cold.
5. Take vitamins
If you are constantly being surrounded by people with colds, it’s worth taking extra vitamins to boost your immune system. Vitamin C is known to combat colds and flus as well as garlic capsules. One or two tablets a day will make us more protected against colds.
Using these simple precautions we will be able to prevent us from catching the cold, and stay healthy and happy to enjoy the little things in life.
