The common cold is a nasty respiratory infection that can cause everything from watery eyes to a very annoying cough. The common cold is called common for a reason, it is one of the most common medical problems reported by people all over the world. It is something that an adult can get several times each year, and children can get as many as ten times a year! Causes
There are hundreds of viruses that cause the common cold out there today, but all of them are highly contagious and can be spread by a simple hand shake or air born, such as when a person carrying a cold virus coughs or sneezes and then it is passed through the air. The common cold is most likely to be caught by breathing in the cold germs through the mouth or nose, but you are far more likely to catch it through your nose than mouth because saliva kills these germs.
The common cold can be spread through many ways because it is so contagious, most of the time you are at the highest risk for catching the cold virus when you are in a public area, and children who attend school are at a very high risk because it is spread so easily. But you can also protect yourself from the common cold by following some simple tips and tricks to keep you and your family happy and healthy.
Symptoms
Symptoms can be very different for each person depending on what kind of cold virus they have and the ways that it affects one person compared to another. But symptoms for the common cold generally includes; itchy, watery eyes, coughing, scratchy or sore throat, runny nose, congestion, sneezing and low grade fever usually occurs. Sometimes mild fatigue can occur with the common cold but it usually does not cause you a lot of trouble.
If you experience severe fever or fatigue, you should contact your doctor to be sure that you are not experiencing a more serious medical problem. Most of the time a cold is not an extremely serious problem and with a mild cold you can continue to work or continue with your daily activity as long as you are able to get plenty of rest in order for your body to fight the infection. As long as you follow your doctors orders the common cold should be no problem for you, and before you know it your symptoms will have completely disappeared.
