Any loving parent hates to see their child suffering from a cold, yet there is no way to avoid your child getting a cold several times in their lifetime. Since you pretty much have to wait a cold out because treating the cold does not make it go away any faster. There are things that you can do to help ease the symptoms of a cold but it will not magically go away.
You can choose to take your child into his/her pediatrician if you want, but children under the age of two are known to get between 8-10 colds a year. While older children are known to catch 6-10 colds per year. With more than 200 different viruses that cause the common cold your child will go through many many colds to build up their immune system against the cold viruses. Your child’s doctor can prescribe a medication for your child which is one reason that I always liked to go to my children’s doctor when they were sick.
If you have more then one child you will most likely see how contagious the cold is. When one gets the virus it is a chain reaction and the whole family usually catches it. I know once my daughter stared school it seems that she was bringing home more viruses then ever since she was exposed to other children. My youngest son sucks his thumb and I am always washing his hands when we are out because I have noticed he was getting sick much more then my other two children.
There are things that you can do to prevent your child from getting the cold virus a bit, but of course there is nothing that you can do to completely abolish it from your child. Children’s immune systems are weaker then ours so and they need to build it up so that they can become immune to the more then 200 viruses the common cold carries. Each cold only makes them immune to one viruses at a time, so there are plenty of viruses and cold your child will encounter. Here are a few things to help you can do to help them avoid becoming contaminated a bit…
* Make sure they wash their hands frequently.
* Dress them warm in the winter and other cold times of the year.
* Make sure your child is up to date with their immunizations.
* Feed your child a nutritious diet and keep them well hydrated.
* Keep your child free of any secondhand smoke. This puts your child at a higher risk of catching upper respiratory problems.
* Keep your home clean but not to clean. If you skip dusting once in awhile it may actually be good for your child.

There are a few things that you can do to help your child as much as you possibly can. Here are some tips to help them out…
* Make sure they get plenty of rest.
* Have your child drink plenty of fluids.
* Saline nose drops loosen thick secretions so your child’s nose can drain easier.
* Humidifiers in their room especially when they are sleeping can help them alot.
* Vicks chest cream is great for helping unplug their nose and making it easier for them to breathe. Just make sure you check the age to ensure it is appropriate for your child.

If you ever worry about anything your child is going through with the cold or any other time, make sure that you contact their doctor. Their doctor is the one to be asking any questions that you have since they are well trained in caring for your child.
