NyQuil is a type of cold and flu medicine made by the Vicks company. Vicks NyQuil is aimed at night-time use, and is to be taken just before bed, because of the presence of sedating anti-histamines, which may cause drowsiness. There is also a daytime equivalent availble. This is called Vicks DayQuil. This latter version of the product does not contain the anti-histamines and it therefore does not cause drowsiness. Vicks NyQuil can be bought in either a liquid or a capsule form.

There are a variety of versions of the Vicks NyQuil medicine. Vicks NyQuil Cold/Flu Multisymptom Relief contains three active ingredients in it. One active ingredient, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a drug that provides for pain and fever relief. A second active ingredient is dextromethorphan, which acts as a cough suppressant. The third active ingredient is called doxylamine succinate, which is an anti-histamine.

Vicks NyQuil Cough, which is only available as a syrup, contains only the cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, and the anti-histamine, doxylamine succinate. Vicks NyQuil Sinus provides pain and fever relief through, acetaminophen, the anti-histamine, doxylamine succinate, and the nasal decongestant, phenylephrine. Vicks NyQuil Sinus is only available as capsules.

There is also a pediatric version of Vicks NyQuil. This is called Children’s Vicks NyQuil, and it is only available as a syrup. This version of the product contains only two active ingredients, these include an antihistamine called chloropheniramine maleate (as opposed to the doxylamine succinate found in the adult version of the product), and a cough suppressant, dextromethorphan. The children’s version does not contain alcohol, unlike the adult versions.

As with all cold and flu remedies you need to make sure that the product is compatible with any other medications you have or any other illnesses or conditions that you may have before you start taking it. Vicks NyQuil should not be taken in conjunction with other cough suppressants, for example. Those with diseases such as diabetes and asthma should really consult their doctor or pharmacist before use. Also, Vicks NyQuil should not be used together with drugs containing acetaminophen as an excess of this substance can damage the liver.
